I'm fortunate to have the opportunity to interview any band, let alone, the chance to interview a group of guys as funny and talented as Gentleman Loser & the Cognitive Dissidence. Here's what happened.
Some of my questions are trite, so I apologize, but I have to do them, because some people don't know you.
Jesse-who are your influences, musically.
Dave Lyman - Jesse, I think that question is trite. However, um -
(birds chirping in background)
Luke Lakatosh - Phsycadelic Furs. I say Raffi. Dave says Jerry Lewis.
Dave L. Jerry Lewis.
Ed M. -this, this is uh (laughter) alright!.. this is, influence wise, this is an experiment in not having any influences. Tried not to listen to a lot of music lately. uhm. besides that, uhm. I don't know. (again, birds chirping.)
DL- Mostly Metallica
Jesse- Obviously
DL- really, the last two or three Metallica albums.
Ed- Seriously though, I probably just um, -
Luke- Mogwai, Gopspeed You Black Emperor, Skinny Puppy,And Led Zepplin-
DL- Yeah
LL- But only the stuff after Ozzy left-
(laughter)
Ed- Ozzy in Led Zepplin, there you go.
Jesse- Do we get to see any live shows that aren't cancelled soon?
(laughter)
LL- Now that question is definitely, fucking trite.
DL- um..
LL- we wrote a song about cancelled shows.
DL- um, probably not. All our shows, will be cancelled. If it goes according to plan.
J- how'd you get your name?
Ed- The long version, or the short version?
J- which ever version you think works under thirteen minutes.
Ed- We stole it from William Gibson.
J- Alright then.
(laughter)
DL- That is the long version.- the short version is yes. -yes.
J- Who's you favorite boyband member? Any boy band. Dave, I know yours.
D-Justin Timberlake- yeah, that album is really fucking good.
Ed- My girlfriend said so, but I won't listen to it. um. I like him, 'cause he was on Punk'd ¹
DL- He's a really good singer, and a bunch of really good songs.
Ed. -Alright, maybe I'll give it a listen.
LL- the bad backstreet boy, the one with the dreadlocks.
J- yeah, he was pretty hardcore.
Ed- The one from N'sync?
LL- yeah.
DL- I don't think it matters.
DL- I also like um, Donny, from The New Kids On the Block. Pat McConagle.
Ed- Um, who else is good- I like Joey Fatone, the fat one.
DL- Yeah, 'cause he can get away with being fat.
J- What magazine cover would you grace if you had to do one?
-come on guys, Marie Clair?
LL- O
DL- I'd do O too..
What's your take on zombies?
Ed- All I know, is Luke don't know shit about zombies! DL- Luke doesn't know shit about zombies.
J- Why's that?
LL- how many zombies have you killed?
DL- a lot.
-more than you.
LL- I have further documentation that I know how to kill zombies.
DL- I'll believe it when I see it.
LL- we'll see.
J- What did you think of Stephen Wolframs new book(A New Kind of Science)?
DL- um, I understand that, it has pages, they're in order, I beleive they're numbered, and -
Ed- and most likely, there is some kind of point that he tries to make.
DL- A lot of words-
Ed- Yeah, to illustrate his point.
-alright-
DL- yeah, that's good.
J- When does your split 7inch come out w/ the Combine?
DL- Whenever we can get the combine to give us a song, or, (A)get the Combine to come over and record.
LL- that would be B-
DL- Yeah, or C
LL- 2-
DL- yeah, that's 2
-or 7.
J- Is there anything else we should expect from you guys, music wise, project wise, in the future?
DL- Yes.
(uncomfortable silence)
LL_ Yeah, I'd say.
J- Are you planning on doing any shows with the Combine?
DL- Most likely. -We're not actually PLANNING on it-
Ed- planning is such a harsh word..
DL- planning and Gentleman Loser- um, yeah.
J- Any influences that aren't necessarily musical?
DL- You're gonna have to ask my lawyer.-
(laughter)
LL- no comment.
DL- uh, yeah, tons of stuff
LL- more non-musical influences I'd say.
DL- Really, a lot of Hellboy book titles.
Ed- Dr. Richard Feynman..
LL_ It's kind of like a stream of consciousness thing, so, we'll make a bunch of dumb music that doesn't mean anything, then we'll be watching tv and like, we'll take a line from that, and name the song.
Ed- Or, uh, have someone give us a title, and make a song.
LL- Which is the easiest way.
Ed- Like, "hey you guys should write a song calld *" and hey, there ya go!
J- Alright, what dead musician would you play with if you could choose any?
DL- Michael Jackson-
( laughter)
Ed- ohh, uh, I got nothing.
LL- So then you'd be saying that you'd play with yourself.
( more laughter)
J- that's funny, 'cause that question wasn't like, "who would you play music with?", it was like, "Who would you pick at or poke at if they were dead?"-
LL- Oh, okay, I'm gonna have to take mine back then,
Ed- That briefly entered into my mind, I was like, who had an extra finger or something!
-ooh, Jerry Garcia, that'd be cool.
DL- yeah-
J- Um, which one of you guys is the most expendable?
DL- Most expendable? I'd say um, probably me, if you listen to most of the mixes, my instrument tends to be mixed down really low, while the bass, above everything else, tends to be the driving force.
Ed- I just want to say that I'm the least expendable, because, um, evertything's in my basement.
LL- I think that uh, if anyone really want the answer to that question, they can visit the former members page of our website.- With a list of all our previously expendable members. And they were the ones who did the mixing!
J- Are you guys single?
DL- As a group yes.
J- Where's your dream venue?
DL- I believe it'd be Red Rock's -which is like on the moon.
-I like when you see all that fire, like when you see Yanni playing-
LL- Lot of fire. -Conshohockin looks like a moon colony, so we could play in- conshohockin-
DL-That or um, Ed's basement is pretty good.
J- If you could be any animal on the planet, hat would it be?
LL- I'd be Dave.
DL- I'd be a badger. I'd have a lot of verocity.
Ed- A shark.
J- That's the interview.
¹ This line used to read "...he was all punk-". Jesse transcribed it wrong. Besides, Joey Fatone is all punk.
